From March 18 to March 21, 2024 the Belgian National Committee of Geography and Doctors without Borders organised the sixth edition of the BeLux Interuniversity Mapathon. This year the event focused on the mapping of the city of N'Djamena (Chad). Since 2020 N'Djamena has experienced severe annual flooding, causing considerable damage to livelihoods, schools and health facilities, and displacing thousands of families. To be better prepared in case new floodings would occur, Doctors without Borders needs reliable maps of the city showing the location of all roads and buildings.
With 332 participants in 9 universities more than 57,000 buildings and 40km of roads were mapped. The event at the VUB was held on 21 March, 2024, and more than 9,000 buildings were digitized in three hours. A big thanks to all teams for this great mapping effort. #belux2024
